history of the centre

The Burton Cummings Community Centre, located in the heart of Winnipeg’s West End, has long been a hub for recreation, connection, and community spirit. Originally opening in 1947 as the West End Memorial Community Centre, the facility was  rebuilt in the 80's and renamed in 1991 to honour one of the neighbourhood’s most celebrated sons—Burton Cummings.

Burton Cummings, born and raised just blocks from the centre, rose to international fame as the lead singer and keyboardist for The Guess Who, one of Canada’s most iconic rock bands. With hits like “These Eyes” and “American Woman”, Cummings helped put Canadian music on the world stage while never forgetting his Winnipeg roots.

The renaming of the centre recognized not only his artistic achievements but also his deep ties to the community. Today, the Burton Cummings Community Centre continues to reflect that legacy—bringing people together through music, sport, recreation, and cultural programming.

Whether it’s a youth basketball game, a family gathering, or a community celebration, the BCCC stands as a tribute to the power of local pride and global impact.
